Hobbies & Interests

Travel

I'm not the first to call travel a hobby, and I won't be the last. I've planned trips for one and trips for a dozen-plus, and I'll happily talk airliners, credit card points, and clever routings.

Great circle routes — the reason a flight to Europe swings up over Canada — have always fascinated me, so I built a tool to really nerd out on the practical geography. Plotline lets you string together destinations, see the distances, and find out which airlines fly each leg.

Coffee

Good coffee is a family tradition at this point. What started as dipping a toe into whole beans and a burr grinder turned into a full-blown pursuit of the perfect shot.

A new bag used to cost a bit of guesswork and a few sink shots, so I built a tool to help with that first dial-in. Shot Doc takes each shot's numbers and how it tasted, tells you the one thing to change next, and learns how your grinder responds with every shot.

Beer & Cocktails

Beer and cocktails came long before I could really cook. I've brewed a few award-winning beers, and the family has a short list of house cocktails that carry us through every season.

A debate with friends over which drink had the drier finish got me building a calculator. Give Proof Point any two numbers from a batch (a refractometer or hydrometer reading, or a target ABV) and it works out the rest: original gravity, final gravity, and ABV.

Cooking

I wasn't much of a cook before kids, and I still hesitate to claim the title. The recipes get better every year (the buttermilk banana pancakes are primo), and I'm always looking for new dishes to bring to the table.

Media in All Its Forms

My parents and sister raised me on books, music, and art. Unfortunately for them, I'm also the millennial who kept video games in the house, which meant years of arguing over whose turn it was to use the TV. I'm always down to chat about the whole gamut!

Family

Of course, every one of these is better with the people who brighten my life. My family motivates me, supports me, and inspires me to be a better brother, son, husband, and father. I'm lucky to have shared more than a few epic trips with them, and I'm looking forward to many more!
